When to Enroll

When you’re 65 and new to Medicare, there can be a lot of dates to remember. But signing up for Medicare is simple. If you’re receiving Social Security benefits, you’ll automatically be enrolled in Medicare Part A when you turn 65. If you’re delaying Social Security benefits past your 65th birthday, you’ll have to contact Social Security to enroll in Medicare Part A.

There are a few options for when you can enroll in Medicare Part B. The first time is the Initial Enrollment Period. This lasts for 7 months – the 3 months before your 65th birthday, the month of your birthday, and the 3 months after your birthday. If you don’t sign up then, you can sign up during the Annual Enrollment Period from October 15 through December 7.
